A great day was had by all involved in the Festival Workshops at the school on Sunday. 70 children joined in altogether, including about 20 pupils from St John the Baptist.
The day began with art and craft activities as the children created various props and accessories for the day, such as bandannas and flower hoops. Junior Jones from Wise Moves provided a team of dancers and musicians (mainly from London) who spent the rest of the morning running the following dance and music workshops:
- Street
- Chinese
- Caribbean
- Flamenco
- African drumming
The dancers taught the children various traditional moves for their specialist style and culture and choreographed the core of each dance. However, the children were all encouraged to offer their own ideas which were then worked into the choreography, or formed a ‘freestyle’ section. Similarly, the drumming sequence included a ‘call and response’ section where children could improvise a rhythm using what they had learnt during the morning. The children were all very creative and engaged in what they were doing.
After lunch, we trooped down to the Palace Ruins where, after some last-minute rehearsals in the grounds, the performance took place on the main ‘stage’. Everything ran without a hitch. A large crowd gathered to watch and they clearly enjoyed what they saw!
A huge well done to all involved in the day, and thanks to Betty Springer who co-ordinated our performance with the festival organisers.
