Year Four Keyboard Concert

On Wednesday 25th March Year 4 held a musical concert for their parents/carers. During the concert they played a range of pieces on the keyboards that they had been learning over the course of the spring term. Year 4 children have been having weekly lessons from a Hampshire Music Teacher in preparation for the concert and we are very grateful for all her patience and teaching. The children will be learning to play the Samba drums during the summer term.

Year Three Assembly, May 2009

Every year, Year Three performs an assembly for the rest of the school, and Year 2 from Bishop's Waltham Infant School. We perform this to show what life at BWJS, and in Year 3 in particular, is like. This morning, 3S and 3Z performed their assembly. The children had written the entire assembly themselves, and did a fantastic job in front of a large crowd.

District Sports Run-Off, June 2009

Every year, Bishop's Waltham Junior School hosts the district sport track events. We are joined by a number of different schools from the local areas, and our finest athletes compete in running, skipping, sack, shuttle and obstacle races. Before this event, we rehearse these races to find our fastest competitors. This morning, we held the run-offs which would determine our final selections. In front of a crowd of parents and the rest of the school, children from Years 3, 4,5 and 6 competed against each other. There were some excellent performances on the track, and we look forward to seeing our runners compete again next week.

District Sports 2009

The annual District Sports event was held today at Bishop's Waltham Junior School in glorious sunshine. Children from BWJS and parents from across the area watched on as children from our school were joined by competitors from Swanmore, Curdridge, St John's, Wickham and Upham. Events included sprints, marathon runs, relays, sack races, skipping races, shuttle runs and obstacle courses, and every team gave some great performances. The final results saw Swanmore take first place followed by St John's in 2nd, and Bishop's Waltham Junior in 3rd.

Bishop's Waltham Festival, 2009

A great day was had by all involved in the Festival Workshops at the school on Sunday. 70 children joined in altogether, including about 20 pupils from St John the Baptist. The day began with art and craft activities as the children created various props and accessories for the day, such as bandannas and flower hoops. Junior Jones from Wise Moves provided a team of dancers and musicians (mainly from London) who spent the rest of the morning running the following dance and music workshops: - Street - Chinese - Caribbean - Flamenco - African drumming The dancers taught the children various traditional moves for their specialist style and culture and choreographed the core of each dance. However, the children were all encouraged to offer their own ideas which were then worked into the choreography, or formed a ‘freestyle’ section. Similarly, the drumming sequence included a ‘call and response’ section where children could improvise a rhythm using what they had learnt during the morning. The children were all very creative and engaged in what they were doing. After lunch, we trooped down to the Palace Ruins where, after some last-minute rehearsals in the grounds, the performance took place on the main ‘stage’. Everything ran without a hitch. A large crowd gathered to watch and they clearly enjoyed what they saw! A huge well done to all involved in the day, and thanks to Betty Springer who co-ordinated our performance with the festival organisers.

Year Four Keyboard Lessons (January 2010)

Today, Year 4 began their Spring Term music lessons by having their first taste of playing the keyboard. Unfortunately, their keyboard teacher was unwell today so it Miss Pearmain and Mrs Phillips had to teach the children how to play their first song called ‘See Saws’. We were extremely impressed with how well the children were able to pick up the tune and keep to the beat of the song, due to their excellent listening skills. By the end of our lesson, they were able to play the whole tune, accompanied by the backing track, twice through with no faults. Well done Year 4!

Year Four Keyboard Concert

This afternoon, Year Four performed their keyboard concert in front of Year 4 parents. The children had been learning the instrument for just under two terms and as well as learning how to read the music and how to play the correct notes, they had also learnt a variety of songs to sing and some were native to Africa. The children really excelled themselves and did both their parents and myself and Mrs Peach proud. Well done to you all.

Year Five - The Owl & The Pussycat

In Mrs Milne’s Literacy group we have been studying the classic narrative poem ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ by Edward Lear. We used dictionaries to find out the meanings of some of the more ‘old fashioned’ words, and analysed the main features of the poem. Over the last couple of days we have been rehearsing a performance of the poem using hand actions to help us remember the words, and concentrating on speaking clearly and expressively. You can watch our final performance here, on BWJS TV. We are really proud of ourselves. Please tell us what you think by using the comments function.

Dance Rocket (July 2010)

Today, 30 lucky children who had been identified by their class teachers as having an aptitude for dance were treated to a day long dance workshop with Adela, a visiting specialist teacher from Wise Moves. Throughout the day, they learnt some pretty tricky (but very hip!) moves in the genres of Rock 'n' Roll and Salsa. Our Achievement Assembly was moved to the afternoon so that their choreography could be showcased in front of the whole school. It was such a treat, with the audience participating fully by clapping the rhythm, and the dancers grinning and grooving their way through two amazing routines. For many of the children, this was their first experience of performing in front of such a big audience, and they pulled it off commendably.  At the end of the assembly before dashing off to catch her train, Adela commented what a fantastic bunch of children we have at BWJS. In her words, the group were the best she had ever worked with and she'd come running if asked back again! Well done to everyone who took part.
